In the preface of the First Edition of "Principles of the Law of Evidence," published in 1977, Dr. Avtar Singh described the book as an introduction to and a brief study of the principles of the Law of Evidence underlying the provisions of the Indian Evidence Act — a work he dedicated as a humble tribute to that Act's century-long success. Today, after incorporating the provisions of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023, the book continues that legacy. Apart from removing a few redundant references and amending the placement of provisions, only a few substantive changes have been brought in by the new Adhiniyam. Now in its 25th Edition (2025), this classic text has been thoroughly updated to reflect India's new evidence law regime.
